Our Working Conditions are Your Learning Conditions

Posted on February 10, 2022 by UCU
STUDENT SUPPORT HAS BEEN VITAL TO PREVIOUS STRIKE ACTION. The working conditions and issues that are affecting Higher Education in the UK have a direct impact on your learning environment and experience. Crippling workloads and consistent refusals from managers to discuss our demands mean that you are being taught by exhausted and demoralised lecturers. We want to offer you the best experience possible, but unfair workloads, attacks on our pensions, discriminatory pay gaps and rampant casualisation make that increasingly difficult. Dedicated teachers are stuck on casualised and fractional contracts that give them zero job security and offer you no continuity in the teaching that you receive. None of your lecturers or professional services staff want to strike, but these issues cannot go unchallenged. OUR WORKING CONDITIONS ARE YOUR LEARNING CONDITIONS. Because employers have refused to consider our reasonable demands and concerns, UCU will be undertaking the following periods of strike action: Monday 14 February – Friday 18 February. Monday 21 February – Tuesday 22 February. Monday 28 February – Wednesday 2 March. Student support has been invaluable in all of our past actions and we are asking for your support again. We are fighting for a University dedicated to education over profit. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP. Email senior management to demand that they engage in meaningful negotiation with UCU.
